National Moth Night

National Moth Night is the annual celebration of moths and moth recording. It is organised by Butterfly Conservation (through the Moths Count project) and Atropos and takes place at a different time of year each year.

National Moth Night raises awareness of moths and provides opportunities to:

  • record moths in your garden or further afield
  • get together with friends to record moths
  • attend a public event to find out about the wonderful world of moths
  • search for target species or select your own
  • remember to send in your sightings to build up an important snapshot of what is on the wing

National Moth Night 2009 takes place on 18 and 19 September and the theme is migration. You can record on either night or both. As part of this year's National Moth Nights we will be conducting the first ever national marking experiment for moths in Britain. At selected locations, moths will be marked harmlessly and released prior to National Moth Night, in the hope that they will be recaptured elsewhere. Will you find a marked moth in your trap? Even a single recapture could tell us a lot about the movements of moths.
